Overview:
  • Orange County unemployment rate decreased from 9.1 % in March to 8.6 % in April. The state unemployment rate also decreased from 12.0 % in March to 11.7% in April. The US national unemployment rate dropped from 8.8 % in March to 8.7 % in April.
  • After steep declines from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the second quarter of 2009, the California Employment Indicator Index has continually increased and was 101.7 in the first quarter of 2011 suggesting positive job growth. However, it decreased to 101.1 in the second quarter of 2011.
  • Orange County industry employment is showing slight increases in select industries, while some are still struggling from the 2008-2009 recessionary period.
  • While populations are still increasing, the Orange County and California population growth rates have slowed since 2008. Orange County was ranked 38th in the percentage growth in from 2000 to 2010 with 5.8% growth during the time period. The state of California had a 10% growth in its population during the same time period.

This indicator measures Chapman University’s Employment Index Indicator Index. The California Index of Leading Employment Indicator is comprised of variables found to have a significant influence on California’s payroll employment growth. These variables include movements in the lagged values of real GDP, real exports, the S&P 500 and the state’s total construction spending. A weighted average of changes in these variables, based on their relative importance in explaining state employment growth, is used in constructing the index.
