Overview:
  • The unemployment rate in Orange County dropped to 6.8 percent in December 2012, a slight drop from the 7.0 percent in November 2012, and a year-over-year decline of 1.1 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 9.7 percent for California and 7.6 percent for the nation during the same period.
  • The California Employment Indicator Index declined slightly from 113.1 in the fourth quarter of 2012 to 107.9 in early 2013. A reading above 100 indicates suggests positive job creation and growth, but growth has slowed gradually.
  • Orange County industry employment is relatively stable, with a slight decline in Professional & Business Services offset by an increase in Education & Health Services.
  • Relative population growth for California has increased to a 12-year high, with over 12% growth relative to population in 2000. Data for Orange County compared to the State is upcoming.

This indicator measures Chapman University’s Employment Index Indicator Index. The California Index of Leading Employment Indicator is comprised of variables found to have a significant influence on California’s payroll employment growth. These variables include movements in the lagged values of real GDP, real exports, the S&P 500 and the state’s total construction spending. A weighted average of changes in these variables, based on their relative importance in explaining state employment growth, is used in constructing the index.
