- In November 2015,
the Orange County unemployment rate decreased to 4.2 percent from
4.3 percent in October 2015 – a decrease of 0.1 percentage points
and 1.0 percent lower than last November’s unemployment rate.
Statewide unemployment was 5.7 percent in November 2015, which
is unchanged compared to the previous month and 1.4 percentage
points lower year-over-year. The national unemployment was 4.8
percent in November 2015, unchanged compared to the previous month
and 0.7 percentage points lower than in November 2014. This makes
Orange County’s unemployment rate 1.5 points below the state rate
and 0.6 points below the national rate.
- The total labor force participants in Orange County decreased during November
2015 by 200 individuals to a total of 1.605 million participants.
Year-over-year improvements have been modest, with 27,300 more
total employed and 15,200 less unemployed than in the previous
November.
- The California Employment Indicator Index decreased by 2.1 points from a revised
reading of 118.9 in the third quarter of 2015 to 116.8 in the
fourth quarter of 2015. While job growth is expected to be positive,
it will be at a slower pace than experienced during the third
quarter of 2015 which was reported to be around 3.0 percent.
- The largest industry employment changes from October 2015 to November 2015 came
from Trade, Transportation and Utilities (6,800 new hires), Government
(2,800 new hires) and Construction (1,300 new hires). Since November
2014, the greatest job gains stem from Construction and Leisure & Hospitality with 8,200 new hires each, representing 9.6 percent annual growth
and 4.2 percent annual growth, respectively. These industries
were followed by Government which added 5,600 jobs, an increase
of 3.6 percent and Educational and Health Services which added
5,100 jobs, an increase of 2.6 percent.
- In 2012, California’s population growth relative to the year 2000 recovered from
the growth rate dip in 2008. As of 2013, Orange County has now
done the same. Orange County’s relative population growth increased
to 10.5 percent for 2014 compared to 9.4 percent for 2013, while
the state’s growth in 2014 was 14.6 percent.
